Another key component of helping to maintain your pet’s health and happiness is having them on reliable, consistent heartworm preventative.
Heartworm disease is serious and potentially fatal to our dogs and cats. Heartworms are spread by mosquito bites and can grow up to a foot long, living in the heart and lungs of our beloved pets.
Unless you intend to breed, we recommend having pets spayed or neutered. Pets that have been spayed or neutered tend to live longer and have healthier lives.
Regular wellness exams allow us to catch underlying health problems early, provide consistent preventative care, and support your pet’s overall health and well-being.
It's hard to provide care without knowing the root of what is ailing your pet, which is why diagnostic testing is so important. Diagnostic testing can include laboratory testing (blood, urine, and fecal) and diagnostic imaging like X–rays, CT, MRI, and ultrasound.
From routine cleanings to tooth extractions, the Thrive Pet Healthcare network of Primary Care veterinarians and Dental Specialists is here to keep your pet's smile fresh! Our general practices can take care of everyday dental maintenance with outstanding regular check-ins, cleanings, and basic surgeries.
Meanwhile, our specialty veterinarians are prepared to handle more complex or chronic dental cases like a root abscess, jaw fracture, abnormal tooth formation, or advanced periodontal disease. These doctors are highly trained within the field of veterinary dentistry and have access to specialized equipment, typically unavailable at primary care clinics.
Our veterinarians are skilled in diagnosing common problems that affect our pets like vomiting, itching, lumps, limping, and more.
Vaccines are essential for preventive care and can increase the chances of a longer, happier life for pets. Ensuring that pets are consistently up to date with their vaccinations can help prevent contracting disease or help lessen the severity of symptoms if a disease is contracted.
Fleas can cause itchy skin, skin infections, and spread tapeworms. Ticks can carry disease such as Lyme Disease, Ehrlichiosis, and more.
We will be by your side during this time of need to offer both medical assistance and emotional support.
As pet parents, we dread the thought of our fur-children ever getting sick enough to require emergency care. Unfortunately, accidents and illnesses do occur, so our exceptional emergency care teams are here to help in your time of need.
Grooming has hygienic and health benefits for pets. We offer safe, quality pet grooming ranging from nail trims and baths to more specific grooming services.
Your pet doesn't just enjoy being your companion - they like to be as fashionable as you too! Proper specialty grooming services mean giving your pet that extra special treatment in hairstyles, dyes, and other grooming requests that go beyond maintenance and bathing. And we make sure to match your wants with Thrive Pet Care partner network specialists whenever possible for a professionally styled pet!
Surgery covers a vast sub-sect of veterinary medicine, from routine spay and neuter to complex orthopedic and soft tissue procedures. Within our Thrive Pet Healthcare network, you can access surgical services on both the primary care and specialty level so whatever your pet’s surgical needs, our trusted veterinarians and surgical specialists are here for you.

As a young boy growing up in Baltimore, MD, Dr. Michael Strickland knew animals were his passion. Moving to beautiful Loudoun County in 1984 he worked with Dr. Jack Howard, his mentor who owned the original Leesburg Veterinary Hospital for 40 years. Dr. Strickland’s dedication and integrity were modeled after Dr. Howards’, and he still continues to carry on the tradition of “Caring is what we do best” from one generation to the next. The practice was purchased by Dr. Strickland in 1985. Dr. Strickland attended the University of Maryland where he earned a B.S. in Animal Science in 1976. He was a member of the Alpha Zeta fraternity and Dairy Cattle Judging team. Dr. Strickland started working in a veterinary hospital when he was just 18. He then attended the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, where he graduated with his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1979. He was the recipient of the "Advanced Proficiency in Small Animal Veterinary Medicine" award. To this day, Dr. Strickland said he enjoys "the variety of cases and meeting people and their pets."

Born and raised in Northern Virginia, Dr. Ken Melberger wanted to become a veterinarian throughout his entire childhood. At the age of 9, he wrote a letter to his family's veterinarian asking about the profession and what it would take to become a great veterinarian. "I still have that note and I enjoy reading it from time to time - it reminds me that this career has truly been a lifelong passion for me" he said. His family's pets became his first patients and he hasn't looked back since. Dr. Melberger attended the University of Virginia and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1995. He was accepted into the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech and was awarded his DVM in 1999. He then went on to complete a challenging 1-year internship at the Angell Memorial Animal Hospital in Boston, MA. While there, he was exposed to a tremendous variety of medical, surgical and critical care patients. After beginning his career in private practice in Alexandria, he and his family moved to Loudoun County in 2008 and he worked at Ashburn Farm for seven years.

Dr. Betsy Henly, a general practitioner with Leesburg Veterinary Hospital since January 2012, grew up with a special understanding of the human/animal bond. "Our dogs were treated so well growing up that my best friend said she wanted to come back in her next life as one of our dogs," Dr. Henly said. "I've always understood the human/animal bond." She also raised two rabbits that had "homes all over the neighborhood." Dr. Henly grew up in Orinda, California and attended the University of Kentucky at Lexington. She earned her undergraduate degree in International Geography in 1995 and was awarded two research awards from the Geography Department. After graduation, Dr. Henly worked in the stock market in San Francisco but realized that career was not for her. She attended Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. She was awarded six scholarships.
